The definition
What is AI Quant?
AI Quant is the use of machine learning or large language models to replace or assist a specific step of the quantitative research workflow — and the output of that step can be verified.
One word, three layers
Search "AI quant" and you get results that do not describe the same thing. That is because one label covers three layers.
Institutional ML quant
Machine learning for factor mining, signal synthesis and risk modelling — inside a full research process. These people almost never say "AI quant".
Retail / developer platforms
LLMs packaged as assistants, co-pilots and no-code builders. This is where the term is used most — because it is marketed.
The hype layer
"AI picks your stocks." Technical substance close to zero. In some markets this layer is formally classified as fraud.
Six rules for responsible AI quant
Five of six trace to a source outside this site; the first follows from the definition. Free to use, quote and criticise.
Process, not conclusion
AI Quant ≠ AI stock picking.
Reproducible
No parameters, no credibility.
Look-ahead & costs
Otherwise it is an artefact, not a result.
No promises
Promising returns is how fraud is defined.
Code computes
The model narrates — it does not do arithmetic.
Downside required
No stake, no reason to be right.
The practitioner changed, not just the tools
Write Python, know quant, build strategies, run backtests
Say what you want
The barrier was never "the tools are weak" — it was "you must learn to program first".

Connect an AI Agent to Market Data
Give an AI agent a way to pull structured market data, then let it analyse. A runnable walkthrough — the loop from the definition page, closed.
Test a Trading Rule Without Fooling Yourself
A backtest is the standard way to evaluate a rule — and the standard way to fool yourself. Three checks that separate a result from a screenshot: look-ahead protection, costs, and survivorship.
Why MCP Beats a REST Call for Agent Workflows
A REST call works once. An MCP server tells the agent what exists, what the parameters are, and what comes back — so it can plan without being taught each endpoint. When to use which.
Common questions
Is "AI quant" a legitimate term, or marketing?
Both. It is a neutral technical term that is heavily over-used by marketing. Legitimacy belongs to the practice, not the word.
Do I need to learn Python?
No. You need to know how to describe what you want, and how to check the answer.
Is this investment advice?
No. This describes how the technology works and how to evaluate claims about it.
